This Epilepsy Awareness and Administration of Emergency Medications Training is aimed at those working with persons diagnosed with Epilepsy who have been prescribed medications for administration during seizure activity.  Examples of people who attend this training are healthcare workers, education staff, bus escorts, employers or employees  who work alongside a person with epilepsy, community workers in both private and voluntary sectors and facilitators of extra-curricular activities in the community.

In these professions, it can be common to be caring for or supporting a person with epilepsy and the aim of this training is to ensure that the professionals in attendance develop a greater understanding of epilepsy and know how to correctly administer Emergency Medications.

Epilepsy Awareness Training Content:

Part One – Epilepsy Awareness:

  • What is Epilepsy?
  • Causes of Epilepsy
  • Diagnosis of epilepsy
  • Treatment options
  • Types of seizures
  • Seizure triggers
  • When to call an ambulance
  • SUDEP
  • Recording seizures
  • Epilepsy Care Plan

Part Two – Emergency Medications:

  • How it works
  • Indications for use
  • How is it given
  • Using pre-filled syringes
  • Potential side effects
  • Practical demonstration
  • Evaluation and Close

Duration:

3 – 3.5 hours

Maximum Participants:

10 participants per course

Epilepsy Awareness Training Assessment & Certification:

Assessment:

Learner skill and knowledge will be continually assessed throughout the duration of the course.

In addition Learners will complete:

  • A Multiple Choice Questionnaire
  • A Practical assessment of medication administration

Certification:

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a certificate issued by Donegal Safety Services which is valid for 2 years. 

To maintain your qualification this course must be repeated after two years from the date of completion.
